Did you know that a hurricane like Florence can have a huge effect on how much money and resources a community gets? It’s all tied to the census. If a disaster occurs just prior to the census, community members may be displaced and not counted. A Duke University student team has been studying the problem. As a part of a class they worked with a client, the NALEO Educational Fund, to look more closely at the issue. Students did case studies of three major hurricanes and interviewed experts.

They made recommendations to NALEO for how policymakers could tackle the issue, and were invited to present their findings at NALEO’s event in Miami, Census 2020 – Make it Count! Natural Disasters and the U.S. Census. The participants were elected officials from across the country.
